UN R 158 Compliance and Code J8H Impact
Mercedes-Benz Trucks has issued a critical update regarding UN R 158 compliance for reversing detection. As of July 7, 2026, backup cameras will be mandatory for specific vehicle classes (M2/M3, N2/N3, and O1-O4) to receive national individual vehicle approval in Germany. While vehicles are typically equipped with the J6W camera from the factory, the introduction of code J8H allows for the omission of this system, shifting the responsibility for legal compliance and homologation to the bodybuilder or customer.
